Agent: Barack Obama

This speech was extremely inspirational and I believe is what really makes Obama stand out from the rest. He not only appeals to his audience’s emotional sides, but also provides a lot of facts and noteworthy goals. Burkes’ guilt redemption circle is used in this speech when Obama talks of starving children or poor education. He makes us feel that as Americans we could be doing a lot better and bring about the goals that we have for our country. Omaba repeats the phrase “Yes we can” as a way to motivate and instill his slogan into our minds. Although it is a very simple phrase, it represents his views on how we can make a difference and we can cause change. This pentad helps to outline the speech and gives a good understanding of exactly what it is he believes. The act shows how American is ready for the change while the agency is the Americans and the purpose is that we need to be unified into one.

Q: Functional Perspectives

1. Hirokawa and Gouran claim that small groups are like living systems. Do you see parallels between the four functional requisites of task groups and the body’s need for respiration, circulation, digestion and elimination?

A:I do see parallels between the fourfunctional requisites of task groups and the body’s need for respiration, circulation, digestion, and elimination. Hirokawa and Gouron see “the group decision making process as needing to fulfill four task requirements, (1) problem analysis, (2) goal setting, (3) identification of alternatives, and (4) evaluation of positive and negative consequences if members are to reach a high-quality solution” .

Information Systems Approach to Organizations

Q. Weick says that “meetings make sense.” Using Weick’s concept of requisite variety, can you explain why Weick thinks most organizations need to have more meetings rather than fewer?

A. Weick believes that the degree of complexity and diversity within the organization needs to match the equivocality of the data it processes. Weick thinks that without a complicated range of interpersonal networks, the task of sensemaking can not be met and that people who are working in an equivocal information environment need to embrace a complexity that’s commensurate with the multiple meaning they confront. Most organizations function quite well even though no one person knows what’s going on.

I believe people lied more with the $1 because it is JUST a dollar. It is no big gain for them to tell the truth and get away with the lie with just a dollar. As for the $20, I think is people recieveing the $20 placed more value on the $20 and felt obligated to tell the truth because of the mere 20x value of the dollar. This reminds me of the new gameshow “Moment of Truth” where people are attached to a lie detctor to win money, and it is interesting to see how far people will tell the truth to win more money.

The levels and pronciples of social judgement theory do demonstrate the way I operate. For example, I agree that I categorize informtaion by my opinion and that I am guilty of taking a bias on info based on my anchor position, and yes I may even be hard to convince at times as to what to believe when I am so set on a position based on my opinions. As for ego-involvmentm, I can claim that I do base many of my judgements witht he thoughts of “how is this good/bad for me?” or “How will this effect those around me?” I blame this on being emotionaly invested in dofferent aspects of my life. All in all, I do feel that Social Judgement theory does play a vital role in the way I react woth those around me and how I make decisions that effect my life, and all these principles take place, many times (almost always) unknowingly.

The story of Pete is accurate for the college student to a degree. Although meeting new people (such as him and Jon) is inevitable when going to school, the process in which he goes about revealing himself and learning about Jon is waaaaaay too text book. Personally, I don’t think I analyze everything as much as Pete does, and Im glad I dont because I’m human, not an education book character. But as for me being an onion.I believe I can be described as an onion, and a damn good onion to boot. For me, my layers would be (starting with the outer layer )

As in the book: Biographical data

My likes in food, clothes, and music

My deep dark secrets

And who I am at the core

Although I am an onion, there is many more sub layers within the main layers. Many people can only see the 4 main layers I posses and there are very few who can see within my sub layers, mainly due to the fact that I don’t give away too much information to others, even those who know me well, but not THAT well.

I believe this to be the same case for MANY people as well.

I was amused by this chapter. The idea that our social universe is shaped by what we say, who we listen to and what others tells us was an abstract concept that I had never thought of. The two concepts of, stories told (the narratives that we use to make sense of out live) and stories lived (the co-constructed actions that we perform with others), made me begin to think of the communicative actions of my past. I began to think I of what I’ve told others in the past, both true and false, and what others have told me in the past both true and false, along with arguments I’ve gotten into and how all of those conversations have shaped me. The idea that “actions of persons-in-conversation are reflectively reproduced as the interaction continues” (one of the maxims of MCC) is what mainly made me begin to think of my interaction during a conversation and how, thought that conversation, my mood, stance, ideas, and self changes throughout a conversation, and when the conversation is over I am changed in some way be it mad, frustrated, happy, more knowledgeable etc.

This chapter, for me, was VERY abstract. The ideas discussed of inner self, and self being through interaction with yourself and others seemed to make sense. But I was wondering if you have to interact to exist. Does the act of conversation create being? Or does it even make us human? If we were unable to have a conversation, both internally and externally, would that mean that our existence doesn’t really, well, exist? And the entire topic of names kept my attention. If we don’t know a name (a word) to something, does that mean the object to us is non-existent? Its like that “if the tree falls in the woods would it make a sound?” type of thing. But what are names but words? And what are words but noises we make and interpret? Sure, its a medium for which we understand each other but how about people like Nell? What is existence without a one to one conversation?I saw this story once on CNN about an autistic girl, who can not speak, yet she made a video that expressed her feelings. She discussed how she doesn’t speak out language, but she and other autistic children speak their own language in which they react with their environment in a different way. They smell, feel and taste things to understand things. It was actually a pretty cool video because she IS autistic and can not speak OUR language but yet she was able to make this video and used some progrm to speak her thoughts and TRANSLATE it into out language in which we can get into her mind and actually understand her. If I find the video Ill post it. Untill then, I think Im done with this post. =) Found the Video!!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnylM1hI2jc

Chapter 1 As I read the chapter, for some reason the memories of the science fair kept popping up in my mind. The processes that were described in the two approaches remind me of the scientific method. I had never once stopped to think of approaching communications as a means for trial and error on a small individualistic scale or on a greater size. But it was interesting to read that interpretive research embodies the idea of emancipation. The ability for this medium of communication to “liberate people from oppression” (pg. 14) is something that has never crossed my mind, And then to further develop the theory that the issue in research is concerned with human nature and dealing with the concepts of free will and determination is a perspective that I have never considered. For example, the Monster.com ad was used as a way to tell people “is this what you want to be doing? Is this what you wanted with your life? Find your dream job here!” Within 30 seconds, the view can become emotionally invested and go to the site to find their dream job and become free of the oppression of their current job. But as for me, if I was to choose between an objective or interpretive styles of approach, I would have to chose Interpretive because it assumes that there is more than one reality in the world and, personally, I like to think in abstract ways, which that approach offers. Chapter 2As for Chapter two I learned several things from the research done by Carl Hovland.

Messages from high-credibility sources produce larger shifts of opinion as opposed to the same message from a low-credibility source (makes sense to me)

There a two types of credibility.

The audience, based on characteristics, can affect the persuasiveness of a message and its content.
